Samsung Galaxy S6 - What to Expect?

Samsung Galaxy S6 – What to Expect?

With the Galaxy S5 not quite enjoying as much success as the S4, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to be introduced into the Indian markets sometime in April 2015 to do what the S5 didn’t. It is expected to be priced anywhere between Rs 45,000 to Rs 48,500. For brevity, we will pitch it up against the most successful flagship phone of the Galaxy series – S4.

Unlike the S3, S4, The S6 is GSM, HSPA and LTE enabled. LTE stands for ‘Long-Term Evolution‘ which basically is a 4G capable device that allows data transfer at speeds upto 300 Mbit per second which is way faster than the existing HSPA/UMTS or 3G services.

Type Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors.
Size 5.1 inches
Resolution 1440 x 2560 pixels (~577 ppi pixel density)
Multitouch Available
Protection Corning Gorilla Glass 4
  Standard TouchWiz user-interface.

The display is a new feature in the new S6. In comparison, the S4 sported a maximum resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels at a much lower figure of 441 ppi pixel density. Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protects the screen which is an update from the Glass 3 in the previous version. In contrast to the last version in the Galaxy Series, the S5 also failed to mark a higher standard than the S6 although both the S4 and S5 equaled at display.

Elegant design

OS Android version 5.0.2 (Lollipop)
Chipset Exynos 7420
CPU Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57
GPU Mali-T760

As compared to the previous Galaxy flagship S4, the S6 is almost twice as fast. S4 had a 1.2 Ghz Cortex A7 processor. The S5 chipset however can be effectively pitched against the S6 powerhouse in terms of speed and calculations with a quad-core 2.5 Ghz system.

Slim and slimmer.

Primary 16 MP, 2988 x 5312 pixels, optical image stabilization, autofocus and LED flash.
Features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, Auto HDR and panorama.
Video 2160p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, 720p@120fps, HDR, dual-video rec.
Secondary 5 MP, 1080p@30fps, dual video call, Auto HDR

The S6 will be equipped with a strong 5 MP secondary camera. A lot of primary cameras were rated at 5 until last year. However the two notable features in the S6 are HD recording and a slow-mo recorder at 120 frames per second which is four times the normal mode.

The S5 has all the features of the S6 when it comes to the camera, except for the 2 MP secondary camera which is similar to the S4.

Surprisingly, the S6 doesn’t come with an external memory slot. Instead, it compensated that lost memory to its mammoth internal space. The S6 comes in 32/64/128 GB internal memory space. All the data is stored on the same drive and the confusions that were previously created due external mounts for a few have been eliminated. The addressing system in ‘My Files’ on the Android is not very user-friendly when it comes to search.

Screen to Body ratio is higher than the S4 and S5.

Wi-Fi Wi-Fi Direct, and Hotspot enabled
Bluetooth Version 4.1
GPS Yes, with A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou

Infrared  Available
FM Radio Not Available
USB Micro USB v2.0 andUSB Host.

The Radio unit of the S6 is pretty much standard of the Galaxy series.

The S6 is slimmer and weighs 7 grams less than the S5 but weighs 8 grams heavier than the S4. However, the S6 has a battery unit that cannot be removed from the phone unlike other devices, and it lacks the external data storage facility which has raised a concern in the minds of many potential buyers.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE is a similar phone but it comes with a brand new edge display as shown above for the quick widgets and views.

The Galaxy S6 is a great phone and does well as the Flagship phone of the Samsung Galaxy series. For the hardcore Android and Galaxy fans, this phone is worth the money. For those who wish to pay for what they buy, it is greatly overpriced. The features that exist in the phone when compared in the presence of the S5 and the Note 4, the S6 should be priced somewhere in the 38,500 to 44,000 bracket.

All in all, it’ll soon be a status symbol and compete head to head with the iPhone 6.
